Port Gibson was spared destruction when Gen. Ulysses S. Grant marched toward Vicksburg in 1863; legend has it that Grant thought the town tucked into the curve of Bayou Pierre was a setting too beautiful to burn. St. Joseph Catholic Church, 909 Church St., completed in 1851, is a fine example of the Gothic Revival style. The altarpiece, a copy of Peter Paul Rubens' “The Crucifixion,” was the work of noted portraitist Thomas Healy. The Communion rail and seven walnut panels were carved by 17-year-old Daniel Foley, son of the St. Louis contractor who built the church. Learn More...
